Napier - nicknamed "Art Deco City" is located in Hawke's Bay Wine Country.  In 1931 there was a devastating earthquake here that decimated the whole town.  When it was rebuilt they decided to build it with a theme and Art Deco was what they chose.  There are lots of great looking buildings here.  Here's a sampling of five of them...

We rented a wonderful two bedroom apartment for 4 days from a couple in New York who come here once a year.  It's located at the top of the A and B building.  It has a beautiful dome on the top of the building that lights up at night.  We found it on the internet and it's fabulous.  It overlooks the corner of Marine Parade - the front street that goes along the ocean and Emerson St., the main shopping arcade.  It is spacious, zen-like, comfortable and flooded with sunlight.  The kind of place you could stay in for a very long time.

Here's what it looks like:

And here's the view from the window...

Our first morning here, we were awakened by the sounds of bag pipes.  We hurried downstairs and caught the bag pipers in action as they played and marched downtown to give a concert in the central square.

You can listen to them play by clicking on the attached movie...

Here's one of the reasons why the Pods will always remember Napier...

(Subtitle:  "Dayenu" or "Oy, it coulda been so much worse!")

Here's our car parked on the MAIN drag called Marine Parade.  We left it here overnight because we couldn't find the covered carpark that was included with our apartment.

Here's what our car looks like without its back window!  Smashed in with a heart shaped rock, the bad guys made off with our I-pod and precious I-pod cable.  They left our beloved wind breakers and all our car food and just took the I-pod which was in our glove compartment.  Lucky for us we didn't have any other valuables in the car.  We learned a big lesson about keeping our car more safe and we're grateful that nothing more was taken from the car.  The police said that it happens here about 100 times a month.  It's a big problem and they're not proud of it.  Mindy was so happy that they didn't take her licorice!  And don't tell those bad guys, but we had another I-pod up in our apartment.  So now we just need another cable AND another car!

What a mess!  Lucky for us that the car is due back in 2 days.

Here's what our backseat looked like...

More Napier coming with the next blog...Stand by for the gannet story....It's truly amazing!
